Table games: roulette, blackjack, baccarat and the rules that change the odds
Table games are the oldest part of any casino, and online they come in two forms: software tables, where a random number generator deals the cards or spins the wheel, and live tables, where a dealer does it on camera. Unlike most slots, table games have rules you can read in full and odds you can work out with simple arithmetic. That makes them a good place to practise the habit this whole site is about: read the small print before you play, and check who is running the table.
Roulette: one zero or two
Roulette pays according to how narrowly you predict where the ball lands — a single number pays the most, red or black the least. The detail that matters most is the number of zero pockets. European roulette has 37 pockets with a single zero, so the house edge on standard bets is 1 in 37, about 2.7%. American roulette adds a double zero, making 38 pockets and an edge of about 5.26% — almost twice as much for the same game. Some single-zero tables also have special rules for even-money bets when zero comes up; if a table offers them, they are described in its rules panel. Whenever both versions are available, the single-zero table is the better deal.
Blackjack: small print with big effects
In blackjack you try to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. Cards count at face value, picture cards count ten and an ace counts one or eleven. A ten-value card plus an ace is a blackjack, or "natural". You can hit, stand, double down or split a pair, and the dealer follows fixed rules.
Here the rules really do move the numbers. The classic payout for a natural is 3:2, so a €10 bet wins €15; some tables pay 6:5, which turns the same hand into €12. Whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, how many decks are used and when you are allowed to double also shift the house edge. None of this is hidden — it is printed on the table or in its rules screen — but it is easy to skip.
Baccarat and casino poker
Baccarat asks one question: will the Player hand, the Banker hand or a Tie come out closest to nine? Cards are drawn to a fixed pattern, so there are no decisions after your bet. The Banker bet wins slightly more often, which is why tables usually take a commission on Banker wins, commonly 5%; the Tie pays well but rarely lands. Check the payout list before you bet, because commission-free variants change the payouts elsewhere.
Casino poker games such as Casino Hold'em or Three Card Poker are played against the dealer, not against other players. You decide whether to continue a hand after seeing your cards, and payouts depend on the strength of your final hand. Each variant has its own paytable, and side bets usually carry a higher edge than the main game.
Table limits and how to choose a table
Every table shows a minimum and a maximum bet. Low-limit tables let a small balance last across many rounds; high-limit tables suit larger stakes. For example, with €30 at a €1 minimum, you can play thirty flat bets at the lowest stake; at a €10 minimum, three hands decide your evening. Match the limit to your budget so that a single round never swallows a large share of it, and resist moving up a level to win back a loss.
What to check about the site
A fair rule set is only as good as the company applying it. Before you deposit, find the company named in the site's terms. If you are in Latvia, look it up on VID's list of licensed gambling organisers; a licensed organiser verifies your identity with an eID card or passport, checks the self-exclusion register and describes a written complaints procedure. If a dispute arises, you complain to the operator first, and in Latvia supervision of licensed organisers belongs to VID. Elsewhere, your national regulator plays that role. Our Optibet review walks through these checks, and the complaints guide explains how to set out a dispute.
Responsible play at the tables
Table games move quickly, especially in software versions where you set the pace. Decide on a budget and a time limit before you start, and treat them as the cost of entertainment. Never chase a loss with a bigger bet — the odds of the next hand are exactly the same as before. If play stops feeling in control, the limit tools in your account, our responsible gambling page and Latvia's self-exclusion register are there to help.
