Refer a Friend: A Reward That Depends on Someone Else
A refer a friend programme pays you when a person you invite registers and meets certain conditions, usually a deposit and some play. It is the only common promotion in which your reward depends on another person's spending, and that changes the question you should ask. Not only "is this a good deal for me?" but "is this a good deal for them?". We do not describe Optibet's referral terms; if such a programme exists, its rules are in your account and in the terms on the operator's site.
How referral programmes usually work
You get a personal link or code. Your friend registers through it, so the site can track them as your referral. Once they complete the qualifying steps written in the terms, typically a first deposit of a minimum amount and a certain volume of bets, the reward is released. It may be a fixed amount, a percentage of what your friend deposits, or a bonus for both of you. Very often it arrives as bonus money with wagering of its own, so the reward has conditions just like any other offer.
The invite friend link and its rules
The "invite friend" section usually comes with restrictions. Terms commonly forbid posting the link publicly, sending it to strangers, using it to open a second account for yourself, or inviting someone who shares your address or payment card. Breaking those rules can void the reward for both of you, and in some cases put both accounts under review. Send the link only to people you know, by a channel they would expect a message from you on, and say plainly what it is.
Their data is not yours to share
Some programmes offer to import your contacts or ask for a friend's email address so that the site can send the invitation itself. That is your friend's personal data, and handing it over is not a decision you should make for them. Ask first, or simply send the link yourself. If your friend later wants to know what the operator holds about them, the EU's GDPR gives them the same right of access to their personal data that it gives you.
When the reward pays, and what it asks of your friend
Look at the qualifying conditions from your friend's side. A hypothetical programme might pay you €20 of bonus money once your friend deposits at least €20 and stakes €100. At a 96% return, €100 of stakes costs your friend about €4 on average; the deposit itself carries the full risk of a gambling session. In other words, your reward is triggered by your friend putting money at risk. That is not wrong in itself, but it is worth being honest about when you send the link.
When not to invite anyone
- They have told you gambling is a problem for them, or you suspect it is.
- They are on a break or in a self-exclusion register; in Latvia, the register kept by VID runs for at least 12 months, and a link from a friend should never be a way around it.
- They are under 18.
- You are inviting them mainly for the reward rather than because they asked.
What your friend should check for themselves
Whoever joins through your link signs their own contract with the company behind the site. Encourage them to find that company's name in the site's terms and, if they are in Latvia, look it up in the list of licensed gambling organisers on VID's website. Suggest they set a deposit limit before the first payment and read the welcome bonus terms themselves rather than relying on your summary. A good invitation comes with the advice you would want for yourself.
Terms worth checking first
- Exactly which actions by your friend release the reward, and by what date.
- Whether the reward is cash or bonus money, and any wagering on it.
- How many referrals count, and whether there is a cap per month.
- What counts as a breach, such as public posting or shared addresses.
Referral bonus: reading the conditions on both sides
A referral bonus usually has two sets of conditions: the ones your friend must meet and the ones you must meet to keep the reward. The invite friend bonus may require that both of you are verified, that neither account has been self-excluded or closed, and that the reward is wagered within a deadline. Read both halves before sending a single link.
A word on our own position: this site earns from partner links, which is a referral arrangement of its own, explained in the affiliate disclosure. The button below is one of those links: an affiliate network picks the offer, it is not an Optibet promotion, and it may belong to another operator.
